- 07/23
- I competed in US Nationals 2010. It was awesome and exhausting.
New PBs: 5x5 single 1:36, average 1:43; 2x2 average 3.65 (off NR by 0.01).
Great stuff: JG's most amazing magic trick, Legal Seafood dinner, ZBLL, cinnamon , ROWE!!! - 07/23
- Now hosting Stachu's CLS.
- 07/21
- Major reorganization on the advanced F2L pages and throughout the site.
- 07/11
- I finished 2nd at Berkeley Summer 2010 with an average of 12.73 in the final round. After an not-so-great first round (13.56 avg), I got a 9.21 on the ridiculously easy first scramble (4-move X cross, but on white, so opposite cross for me). With the last solve being a timer failure (0.09 DNF), I ended up with a counting 14.08 and a 12.41 average that should have been a PB sub-12.
Other highlights: 20.03 single OH, and spectacular fail in OH final. Video for a final round solve (11.80).
- 06/23
- The new version of Conrad Rider's VisualCube incorporates the color scheme cookies and stage masks I added. I modified the rest of the site to work with the new source.
- 06/14
- The advanced F2L page has been completely revamped, now with a list of all D-cross F2L cases (pair type, target slot, any empty slot, AUF) that can be solved (by right-handers) without reducing to another case using rotation or a double layer turn. Also added are all adjacent-slot Jeff2L cases, orientation-preserving F2L, and other tricks for last layer control. Post anything I missed here.
I used Conrad Rider's VisualCube, which provides much more functionality than Lars Vandenbergh's imagecube. I've modified the source so that you can set the default color scheme. - 06/11
- I did an interview for Indonesian cuber Andik Lukman.
- 19/04
- Everyone should check out David Calvo's secret algorithm for OLL 55.
- 19/04
- I finished 3rd at German Open 2010 with an average of 12.52 in the final round. First round just sucked, but second round was also not bad, as I progressively warmed up. I think this is about what I should be averaging at home, if I ever actually do averages at home.
This is probably my last competition in Europe during this stay. 5 competitions in 5 countries, 4 3x3 podiums, lots of PBs, new friends of many different nationalities, amazing travels and stories...it's been awesome. I'll see you all again some time! - 12/04
- I finished 2nd at Zaragoza Open 2010 with an average of 12.73 in the final round. Sub-13 average on all three rounds (12.81 and 12.61 for first two)! Either it's the F1 I've been using since Danish open, or the 11.99 average broke a psychological barrier. In any case, I'm very pleased. My final round solves are on video!
Also PB on OH and 5x5, both average and single.
- 03/03
- I finished 2nd at Danish Open 2010 with an average of 11.99 in the final round (PB, first sub-12!). Second round was a disaster , with 20.75 POP, 14.27+, and timer failure on the last solve. I used the F1 that Kai Jiptner gave me at Benelux Open for both 2H and OH, and I love it! Other highlights: Two sub-25 OH averages (both PB), a sub-2 BLD (pure 3OP), PB 2:20 average and 2:03 single on 5x5, 29 DNF on fewest moves.
It's been a crazy week. Thanks for all the memories. ^^
- 23/02
- I finished 4th at Benelux Open 2010 with an average of 14.19 in the final round. Bad average in the final round (with a +2 that made a difference), but I got a 8.50 PB/NR in the first round (PLL skip (just AUF U'), predicted before OLL sexymove-sledgehammer) and twice again missed a PB average (13.14 and 13.25, both with a counting 14+). 33 on fewest moves!
Thanks to my hosts, you know who you are. =) - 12/02
- Wow, we have a website.
- 07/02
- Un coup de jeune pour les pages OLL/PLL.
A new look for the OLL/PLL pages.

I won Toulouse Open 2010 with an average of 13.43 in the final round. Aside from a single PB of 10.27, I was also twice very close to having a PB average (3mm in the second round for the 15.78+). It was a pleasure meeting/seeing again French, British, Spanish cubers, and one Belgian and one German! ^^ Full results - 15/01

- I sucked hard at US Nationals 2009 but don't feel too bad about it. It was fun meeting up with cubers again. Congrats to all the winners, and especially to Rowe!
As a note, I had a prayer request in the second round for myself to get five N perms. That didn't happen, but I think the prayer worked a little too well. - 07/11
- New personal typing record: 130 wpm. I had 127 and 128 before that.
- 05/31
- D-rek is cool (I owe him a text ad).
- 03/30

- 03/30
- New personal typing record: 124 wpm. I'm now using Dvorak with Backspace and Caps Lock exchanged.
- 03/29
- New section added to the F2L page: Looking Ahead and Simple Multislotting. This is the sort of insight you can usually only gain by closely following a good speedcuber's F2L.
- 03/28
- Printable page for four-look last layer. Also redid OLL/PLL printable pages with CSS.
- 03/17
- YouTube playlist of the Princeton Juggling Club's 2009 show, The Juggler of Oz. I have a pretty good run of 6 balls (and a 7-ball flash) starting at 4:35 of "04 Yellow Brick Road."
- 02/07
- I won the Newark Winter competition 2009 with an average of 12.98 in the final round. This was a very good round for me, especially since I have been out of practice (as reflected in my second round average of 14.12). Full Results.
Thanks to Bob Burton, and to Daniel Saha for giving me a cube!
Also, I should really now be considered "in retirement" for now, only coming out once in a while for competitions but not practicing. There's a lot of other stuff to do! - 02/02
- F2L page, now with color-customizable applets.

- 11/04
- Final results for the Negative Time Solving Contest. There were 44 participants representing 6 countries (plus Smerbia). Of these, 2 participated in Europe and the rest were from North America. This is the largest turn out ever for this annual event, now in its fifth year!
Here are the top 3 finishers in 3x3 speedsolve:
Jason Baum with -59 minutes, 49.43 seconds; Jun Hyuk Kim with -59 minutes, 48.20 seconds; and Stefan Huber with -59 minutes, 46.91 seconds.
Shelley Chang had the most negative solve for 3x3 blindfolded, with -57 minutes, 57.66 seconds.

Hey guys-
We're going to be screening CubeFreak at the Edwards Island Cinemas in Newport Beach on Saturday, April 26, at 11am as part of the Newport Beach Film Festival... please help us get the word out! We need to fill the theater, and we need to get as much online 'buzz' as possible! :)You can log onto the festival's CubeFreak page at
http://newportbeach.bside.com/2008/films/cubefreak_newportbeach2008; you can include mentions of this on blogs, webpages, etc., and you can check out our new blog at www.cubefreakmovie.blogspot.com. We also have a myspace site for CubeFreak. Thanks to everyone for their patience and support!

- Cube/juggling demo at Temple City High School (invited by their school cube club). Two successful 3x3 blindfolded solves (one in Rampage).
- 03/16
- Finally, the updated PDF version of the blindfold cubing guide. I made several changes, which are also reflected on the online version. The PDF guide has 26 pages!! but there are lots of pictures and lots of examples. I already put in some efforts to make the pictures come out the way they did (LaTeX isn't made to do things like that), and I just couldn't be bothered to try to figure out how to save more space.
- 03/08
- Made changes to the edge orientation section of the blindfold cubing guide. I'm struggling with wrapping text around figures with LaTeX....
- 03/03
- Algorithm Viewer (written with javascript). You can change whatever comes after "alg=". I'm going to use this to give easy access to applets from the PDF blindfold guide (and also from OLL/PLL page?). I can work on making it possible to change the color scheme later.
- 03/02
- Rewrote the corner orientation section of the blindfold cubing guide. I dealt separately with 2-corner rotations and 3-corner rotations, using slightly different monoflips. Advanced algorithms have all been moved to the appropriate section of the miscellaneous blindfold cubing techniques page. This was one section many people had trouble with, so hopefully this new change will help. There are a couple more changes I want to make before putting the PDF guide online.

- Speedcubing and blindfold cubing demonstration at Mathapalooza 2007 at Los Altos High School in Hacienda Heights. 13 sec speedsolve, blindfold DNF (2 corners)
CO:U'-[R'FRF'RU'R'U]x2-U and two D-corners; EO:1 2 6 7 8 10 11 12; CP:(13457628); EP:12-cycle starting with (1 7 11 4 10 ...) - 01/01
- Version 2.44140625 (third version) of the Blindfold Cubing Guide is now available. There is only one change, but it's an important one; I switched the restriction on edge orientation from (UDFBR2L2) to (UDF2B2RL). There are several advantages to this, which I won't go into here, and most of the top blindfold cubers who use the 4-step 3-cycle method have switched. I'm trying to get used to it now.
- 01/01
- Happy New Year to all puzzlers!
- 12/31
- December was Cubefreak's busiest month ever with 28877 visits by 18379 unique visitors.
- 12/26

- 12/25
- You can now change the applets' color scheme in the Blindfold Cubing Guide as you like.

- 12/08
- Cleaned up PLL and added a suggested order for learning the algorithms.
- 12/05
- Reorganized F2L. Redid Notation using ImageCube.
- 11/30

- 11/23
- Absolute Mind by Sébastien Felix. This is something to be excited about.
Any sub-15 cuber interested in working on the Multislotting project? - 11/14
- Added "How should I learn the Fridrich Method?" to Speedcubing.
- 11/10
- I won the Caltech Fall 2007 competition with an average of 13.90 in the final round (but it would have been a 13.26 without a +2 penalty). I also placed fourth in 3x3 blindfolded with a best time of 1:59. Do you know how ridiculous that is? There are only 12 cubers in the world who have done a sub-2 min in competition. There were four at this competition, and Chris Krueger wasn't even there.
Congrats to Chris Dzoan for the one-handed world record average! I'm sure Ryan will try to regain this. Will we see a sub-20 average in this category soon? Full results.
Note: +2 penalty on 2nd round 3rd solve (14.08+) and final round 2nd solve (15.49+). Tightened screws after first round. - 11/07, 09, 11
- More updates on the F2L page. Moved some of the material to Advanced F2L. To do: more logical to talk about different angle before wrong slot? then introduce the two goals for fast F2L first.
- 11/05
- Updated the F2L page with more exposition and examples for some basic techniques. I plan to include a bunch of non-standard algorithms in the near future.
- 11/05
- In the news item for 07/09, I posed the following challenge: "07/09: I'd like to see someone who doesn't know how to solve a cube learn to solve it blindfolded. Would some brave soul please give it a try? It really shouldn't be too hard. You'd be the only person in the world who can say, "I can solve a Rubik's Cube, but only blindfolded" (ok, of course you can use the blindfold method with you eyes open, but you know what I mean)."
It's been done. Click to read. - 11/04
- Let me know if I made a mistake in anyone's results for the Negative Time Solving Contest. It's also not too late to submit more times. [edit] Final results are up.
- 11/03
- Lucas Garron made the submission form for Negative Time Solving Contest, and it's kind of awesome. Props to Lucas!
- 11/03
- New format on the Video page. I'll get rid of the tables soon. I'm basically making things look nicer without actually adding new material.
- 11/03
- Does anyone know how to make whatever is inside "a name" tags not be shown like a link using CSS? [edit] Problem solved. Thanks, Ryan.
- 11/03
- Edited the css for headings (not completely done yet). Like the change so far?
- 11/03
- Changed the format of the Links page. I'll be adding more new pages when I get the chance.
- 10/31
- October was Cubefreak's busiest month ever with 24124 visits by 15208 unique visitors. I guess I have the World Championship to thank for this.
- 10/31
- Results from past years of the Negative Time Solving Contest have moved to a separate page. I'm currently working on a php form for submitting results. Hopefully I'll have that up and working by Sunday.
- 10/28
- The same change has been made to the PLL page. The applets are now here.
- 10/28
- The OLL page now has no applets. Instead I copied those into another page.
- 10/27
- I'm thinking that the current font color might be a bit too dim against the background. If I change it to black, this page becomes this. Which one do you think is better?
Changed the main font to #444. Thanks for the input! Also edited the css a bit. You'll notice that I've temporarily stolen the color code from speedcubing.com for the top 3 of the ranking in the negative solving page. I'll find my own color eventually. - 10/25
- Announcing the Negative Time Solving Contest 2007. Let's have some fun.
- 10/25
- Wrote up what's been going on with juggling recently.
- 10/21
- Updated Miscellaneous Blindfold Cubing Techniques with a bunch of algorithms for corner orientation. It's still messy.
- 10/18
- Posted my thoughts on the world championship on the Yahoo! forum.
- 10/09
- My results in World Championship 2007 (Full Results):
7th in 3x3 with an average of 13.43 in the final
3rd in 3x3 blindfolded with a best time of 1:39.56 (AsR, but pretty easy solve) in the final
5th in 2x2 with an average of 5.35 in the final (also a best of 2.82 (AsR), which was a ridiculously easy one-turn complete first layer and COLL)
16th (dead last!) in 3x3 one-handed final, which I managed to get into with a fairly easy 27. I think I should have asked if it's possible to give my place in the final to the 17th finisher in the first round.
- 09/29
- I'm leaving for Budapest today. World Championship 2007 is next weekend. I bet I have to type in QWERTY or some Hungarian variation of that on the hotel computers. That's going to suck.
- 09/28
- Made a Miscellaneous Blindfold Cubing Techniques page. It's almost empty right now, but I'll try to throw in a few random things.
- 09/26
- Updated the PLL page and the PLL print-out page with my current algorithms.
- 09/26
- Trying out a new ad service.
- 09/24
- Wrote a bit more on the Dvorak page about other alternative keyboards.
- 09/22
- Updated the OLL page and the OLL print-out page with algorithms I actually use now (for the most part, I think).
- 09/19
- Good news for those who can't read fine print: the videos should actually be working now.
- 09/19
- Added examples with set-up moves to the corner orientation section of the blindfold cubing guide.
- 09/18
- A slight update on the OLL page. I realize that I need to update a few algorithms with their descriptions.
- 09/18
- By the way, from Caltech Summer 2007, the fastest average in competition using MGLS is 17.63 by Lucas Garron himself.
- 08/25
- I placed second in the Caltech Summer 2007 tourament with an average of 13.51 in the final round, after Ryan Patricio, who averaged 13.47. Yes, this is the first Caltech tournament that I participated in and didn't win, but I also set some great times: 12.97 average (NR) in the first round, which raises my rank to fourth in the world, and four single-solve personal records (all sub-12 (11.88, 11.84, 11.60, 11.49), all non-lucky, with one opposite cross (11.88?) and one rare ZBLL(11.60?)). I placed third in 3x3 blindfolded and 2x2 speedsolve. Congratulations to all the winners, and especially to Ryan for his very consistent finish. Full Results.
- 08/17
- Added a few ideas on the Dvorak page.
- 08/17
- I saw a copy of the Guinness 2008. The puzzle page has been overtaken by Sudoku and Scrabble...no Rubik's Cube in sight. They still need to send me three certificates, but whatever. 08/12
- The site is back up! Sorry for the inconvenience. I changed to a new server. The next time you can't access the site, please use the internet archive.

- I'd like to see someone who doesn't know how to solve a cube learn to solve it blindfolded. Would some brave soul please give it a try? It really shouldn't be too hard. You'd be the only person in the world who can say, "I can solve a Rubik's Cube, but only blindfolded" (ok, of course you can use the blindfold method with you eyes open, but you know what I mean).

- QWERTY sucks. I've switched to Dvorak, and I suggest you do the same. And when you have children, have them learn Dvorak from the beginning!

- I placed first in the Caltech Fall 2006 Competition with an average of 13.34 (AsR) in the final round. I also set the following personal competition records: 3x3 single solve 12.04 (AsR), 4x4 single solve 59.xx. I placed first in 4x4. I came in 4th in blindfold, but I solved all three solves with times around 2:40. Full Results.
Thanks to the organizers from the Caltech Cube Club!
Also, thanks to Cubesmith for helping me repare my revenge. Maze Cube is such a beast.

- Apparently, I'm in Ripley's Believe It or Not! (ISBN-13 9781893951129) "King of Cubes: Believe it or not, 14-year-old Shotaro Makisumi, of Japan, can solve a "3 x 3 x 3" Rubik's cube puzzle in a mere 13.72 seconds." And there's a picture of me. Thanks to Peter for the info. [update] 13.27 was my fastest solve at Caltech Winter 2005 at Exploratorium, and that's also where the picture was taken. Assuming Peter meant 13.27, since Ripley's don't say they list world records, this is accurate information! Can anyone confirm this?
- 08/15
- New domain name, new host. Cubefreak.net. I haven't uploaded the videos yet. I won't be updating the infoseek account from now on.

- I have a very sad news. I was at the bookstore last night and saw Guinness 2007. In addition to Leyan's 11.13 single record, it still had my 14.52 average (Anssi's record was set in March, 2006) and--this is outrageous--the most number of cubes solved in an hour at 42. Some of you may recall this article linked from speedcubing.com some time ago. I was too disgusted to remember what the "record holder's" name was, so I don't if this is the same dude. This is just too sad. I mean, if anyone gave just a bit of thought, the number makes no sense: 42/hour is a lot slower than the 24-hour marathon record of 2000 cubes several years ago by Jess Bond, which the Guinness accepted. wtf?

Congrats to Leyan for the new world record and his win in blindfold! Full results can be found at speedcubing.com. In case anyone is wondering, my 4x4x4 DNF was a POP at the very last second in a solve with double parity that would have been 1:10. I was just being stupid on the fourth solve, and Frank was just too good. =)

- New best average: 13.42. I don't take very many averages any more, but it's nice to know that I can get times close to this whenever I do. But the again, reproducing times like these in competition will be very difficult. Other than the motivation they provide, I no longer see much point to unofficial averages at this level. *sigh*

I broke four World Records in this tournament: 2x2x2 single 4.13, average 6.29, 3x3x3 one-handed single 23.76, mean 27.56.
